Now frozen and desolate, some claim the continent may have been home to an ancient civilisation.
Others claim Antarctica was the home of the mythical city of Atlantis.
And sightings of “pyramids”, “tunnels” and “lost cities” on the icy continent’s surface have brought more questions than answers with the most important being: Who made these giant structures?
Here are some of the most bizarre supposed sightings in the search for Antarctica’s long-lost civilisation.
Earlier this year, YouTube theorists Blake and Brett Cousins from thirdphaseofmoon came across what they thought to be a “military base” in the middle of the desolate continent.
Scavenging the land with the help of mapping software, the pair found a row of pointed structures measuring up to 2,000 metres in length.
And if things weren’t strange enough, some of the structures seemed to emit a bright red light, which reflected onto the snow below.
But the jaw-dropping discovery only left the pair hungry for more information, saying: “I wonder if they’re all connected underneath the snow.”
Just months later, another conspiracy theorist concluded Antarctica is much more connected than we first thought.
Removing “water” from the options on Google Earth, Neal Evans was shocked to find a plethora of lines connecting the continent all the way to Australia.
Some lines even go as far as Argentina, more than 6400 kilometres across the water.
Although Neal believed the strips may have been ley lines connecting landmarks and religious sites across the world, he concluded: “One thing is for certain – nature does not create straight lines.”
Viewers who saw his “discovery” online even jumped to the conclusions that the lines were actually tunnels.
But in the most groundbreaking discovery to date, a conspiracy theorist found evidence of what he claimed to be an ancient civilisation wiped away from the continent’s surface centuries ago.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Online, conspirator Graham shared an image found using mapping software which he believed may be a pre-historic structure.
Speaking of his discovery, he said: “The object in this video is strange as it looks half-buried in the ice, maybe it was something that fell from the sky and smashed into the ice long ago.
“But my instinct is that this and many other objects that look like structures are man-made from the distant past.
Just months later another theorist claimed to have spotted another “master pyramid” in the depths of Antarctica.
This led author Michael Salla to suggest pyramid-like structures (like the ones created by the Egyptians and Mayans) were erected all over the world as power generators for alien space crafts.
On the topic, he said: “If you have these pyramids strategically places around the world generating this charge, it is possible to create a general standing wave around the world which is basically a wireless transmission of energy.”
This has led some theorists to wonder whether the rumoured “lost civilisation” originally came from a different planet.
