Bargain hunters are enjoying a £4.75billion spending spree in today’s Boxing Day sales after millions queued from midnight outside shopping centres across Britain.

Retailers are slashing the price of clothing, homewares and household gadgets by up to 70 per cent in the hope of attracting as many customers as possible in what has been a tough year for the High Street.

The combined in-store and online spending total is set to be an all-time UK daily retail spending record, Centre for Retail Research data shows.

The estimated £3.71bn spent in shops and £1.04bn online will beat last years record total of 4.46billion, experts predict.

Many retailers are offering record bargains in a bid to rescue profits as experts said it was ‘encouraging’ to see shoppers flocking back to high street stores.

Thousands queued from the early hours at shopping centres and retail parks, including those in Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff.

Oxford Street was also packed out as shoppers flocked to the retail hotspot with the price of good slashed by up to 50 per cent in some stores.

Some 50,000 shoppers were through the doors of Westfield London and Stratford City by 10am.

The Harrods Winter Sale launched this morning, with customers arriving at 7am, queuing on all sides of the famous department store.

Analysts also said today’s expected record spree was triggered by shoppers focusing on Boxing Day to pick up a bargain and a post-Christmas rush after low pre-Christmas shopper numbers.

Shoppers queued outside stores around the country before first light, and people were pictured inside with armfuls of half price clothes, while more than half a million people are expected to descend on central London.

A study by the Centre for Retail Research for VoucherCodes showed that today’s spending is expected to be almost treble Panic Saturday’s £1.7bn before Christmas Day, and 50 per cent bigger than Black Friday’s £2.95bn.

It comes as retail revenues plummeted this year – with around £17billion wiped off the share prices of the country’s biggest shops – with more stores are expected to go bust in 2019.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, said: ‘Boxing Day was the biggest spending day ever last year, and will be bigger again this year.

‘Spending of £3.7billion in stores and a billion online will be so high because shops and customers keep saying that almost all shoppers will focus on day one of the sales, to get the best deals.

‘Research also shows many shoppers will spend all their money in one go, unlike a few years ago when people would go to the sales several times over a week or two.

‘Now it’s a Black Friday-style rush on the first day.’

Anthony McGrath, retail expert at the Fashion Retail Academy said it was ‘encouraging’ to see thousands flocking to high streets in the early hours.

He said: ‘Despite some big names starting their sales online earlier, the queues show business models, used by retailers such as Next, of not reducing stock until after Christmas is still a proven success.

‘In an age of ever-increasing online sales, any initiatives which get consumers off the sofa and into stores has to be applauded.

‘Shoppers are being more conscious of their purse strings and have waited until Boxing Day to splash out on designer wear and luxury items.

‘Seeing the phenomenal sales queues resulting from this is a positive sign for retailers.’

Footfall in London’s West End was up 15% on last year by 10.30am on Boxing Day as shoppers flocked to the area to avail of sales.

Jace Tyrrell, chief executive, New West End Company, said: ‘In London’s West End we have seen a Boxing Day bounce, with footfall up 15% this morning.

‘International tourists are out in force driven by the weaker pound, as well as domestic shoppers who are looking for a day out after family celebrations yesterday.

‘We’re on track for £50 million spend today, which will rise to a total figure of £2.5 billion for the critical Christmas trading period.

‘It has been a competitive and challenging year for UK retail with rising costs and squeezed profit margins.

‘As the largest private sector employer in the country, we need the Government to get beyond Brexit and support Britain’s retail sector in 2019.’

Boxing Day still remains a key shopping day – twice as much money was spent on Boxing Day than Black Friday last year – while the period between Christmas Day and New Year generated £12 billion in sales, according to ShopperTrak.

Retail intelligence experts Springboard suggested that average UK footfall for the period up to midday was 4.2 per cent lower than for the same hours on Boxing Day last year.

This is a slightly smaller drop than the 5.6 per cent in 2017 from 2016, but a greater drop than on Boxing Day in 2016 when footfall declined by 2.8% from 2015.

It also said footfall up to midday on Boxing Day is 10 per cent lower than on Saturday December 22, which was the peak trading day before Christmas this year, and 9.4 per cent lower than on Black Friday.

It has been a torrid year for retailers with notable high street names such as Poundworld and Maplin falling into administration, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams announcing plans to shut stores, while Superdry, Carpetright and Card Factory issued profit warnings.

High street retailers have been battling higher costs, low consumer confidence as shoppers rein in spending amid Brexit uncertainty and people increasingly shop online rather than visit bricks-and-mortar stores.

Around 2,500 joined a line outside the Silverlink Retail Park in Newcastle for the opening of the Next store at 6am.

The clothing giant had issued 1,300 tickets, as many people as its store can accommodate at once, but when everyone was inside there were still more than 1,000 waiting to get in.

The Next sale is one of the most highly-anticipated events on Boxing Day as the cost of many items have been reduced by up to 50 per cent.

One shopper said: ‘We ordered pizza at 3am to warm ourselves up.

‘Some people might think it’s extreme to wait for five hours for a shop to open, but we don’t want all the best deals to be gone by the time we get inside.

Samsung TVs were reduced by £700 and the price of the Lenovo IdeaPad was slashed by £220.

High street stalwart M&S is offering up to 50% off for Boxing Day shoppers.

Don Williams, retail partner at KPMG in the UK, said: ‘Since Black Friday hit UK shores back in 2013, the festive sales period hasn’t quite been the same.

‘Indeed, previous KPMG analysis did highlight that the discount bonanza in November cannibalised the traditional Christmas shopping period, bringing sales forward and twisting retailers’ arms to discount for longer.

‘With this year’s Black Friday being a bit of a damp squib, many could be forgiven for hoping that would have benefited post-Christmas sales, including Boxing Day.

‘But, for the vast majority, that is unlikely. Most will still have their work cut out to persuade shoppers who have notably been clawing back their spend.

‘But for those retailers stocking must-have brands, there is still plenty to play for in the final festive push.’

David Pierotti, general manager at Silverburn shopping centre in Glasgow, said: ‘Attracted by the thrill and discounts available, Scots are continuing to take the sales seriously with early birds queuing outside Next from 3am this morning with Zara also proving to be incredibly popular with our shoppers today.’

Ryan Manson, general manager at Union Square in Aberdeen, said there has been a lot of demand for it cinema and restaurants on Boxing Day, adding: ‘There’s been several big new film releases recently, including Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman, and Spiderman into the Spider-Verse, which are proving a major draw.’

Gordon McKinnon, operations director for intu – one of Britain’s biggest shopping centre owners with 14 malls including Manchester’s Trafford Centre, Gateshead’s Metrocentre, Essex’s Lakeside and Braehead, near Glasgow – said: ‘The Boxing Day bonanza will see many shoppers brave early morning winter weather to have first pick of the bargains.’

Doors opened at the Next store at the Bullring in Birmingham at 6am – with some at the beginning of the queue starting at 12am to secure a place.

Around 700 people were thought to be waiting patiently for doors to open at Next Bullring this morning.

Solihull property developer Mark Severn who was one of the first shoppers in this morning, said: ‘I think it is busier this year now at 7am, but much better organised.

More than 400 people queued outside of Next in Nottingham to grab themselves a Boxing Day bargain – with the first in the queue arriving at 12.30am.

Most shoppers were looking for children’s clothing, with some stocking up for the future, spending up to £600.

One of the first in line was full time mum Amina Aziz, 24, who arrived at 12.30am.

‘You get better deals and there are things you can’t afford at other times of the year.

‘We bring biscuits and we do not drink a lot because there are no toilets. We are all family so it is good company.’

Full time mum Nawzhin Sidiq, 29, who has two children, four and two, had

also been queuing since 12.30am.

She said: ‘It’s good for buying kids stuff. It is really good quality and I like shopping in Next.

‘It is expensive to buy clothes for children. I want to get everything – coats, dresses and school clothes.’

Around 445 people arrived and queued before the store opened, with Next’s store manager, Megan Kay, claiming that figures were up on last year’s, when they had just over 200.

Men will be the biggest spenders, with findings showing they expect to shell out 50% more than women at £227 compared with £151.

Boxing Day is the most popular day to shop during the Christmas sales period, according to Barclaycard, with three in 10 Britons planning to hit the sales on December 26.

Last year’s figures for Boxing Day shows that spending rose more than 10 per cent.

Konrad Kelling, managing director of customer solutions at Barclaycard, said: ‘Whilst most plan to spend Boxing Day with friends and family, Brits also don’t want to miss out on the best deals to be had.

‘Surprisingly, men plan to spend more than women in the sales this year – whether that be staying up late to buy that must-have item or even browsing online during the family festivities.’

But more and more consumers are planning to start their sales shopping even earlier, with three in 10 bargain-hunters beginning their spree on Christmas Eve and 17% on Christmas Day.

Of those Christmas Day shoppers, three in 10 said this is because of fear of missing out on a bargain.

High street firms hoping for a boon after a torrid year will be in for disappointment as online will again steal the show.

Four in five of those who plan to shop in the sales will do some online, with 69% saying they will make the majority of their purchases online – up from 42% in 2017.

Nearly a third of those who intend to shop online plan to use their smartphone or tablet to make a purchase.

Mr Kelling added: ‘Boxing Day remains the most popular day to shop for bargains over the Christmas period. However, this year the majority of consumers plan to shop online from the comfort and convenience of their own home rather than braving the winter weather and crowds on the high street.’
